What To Do with Two Toddlers

I have twins 3 days out of the week…

I babysit my best friend’s little boy and he is 2 months younger than our lil man (lil man is almost a year old), so it’s like having twins because they pretty much do all the same stuff. I have been doing this for about 3 months now, and want to quickly share with you some ways to keep them safe, keep them entertained, and how I keep myself sane.

First off I would highly recommend following a schedule. Here is an example:

6am – Friend’s boy gets dropped off, maybe takes a short nap or plays.

7am – Lil man gets up, joins in for playtime

8am – Breakfast

9am – Bottle/nurse and naps

11am – Wake up, change diapers, play

12pm – Lunch, playtime

1pm – Bottle/nurse and nap

2:45 – Friend picks up boy.

This is pretty much lil man’s normal schedule. My friend’s boy seems to do pretty well with it. It took a few times for him to adjust, and of course there are days when both kids are completely off. The reason I like to have a schedule is that it keeps the chaos to a minimum. Also, when they nap, it gives me a break to either shower, clean up, prepare for playtime projects, or just be lazy.

Second, I make sure that they have a safe place to play. Right now I am using a Baby Diego 8 panel playpen. You could also dedicate a room as a playroom. I do this because it allows me to tend to a child while knowing that the other one is safe and I don’t have to constantly chase after them. Its also where we keep all the toys, thus they are not strewn out all over the living room. I like the playpen because I can adjust the panels, and they are SOLID. The boys can pull themselves up on it without me worrying that it will collapse. When I need to cook lunch, or take a shower, I usually put the boys in their walkers. Its a great way for them to have some freedom, yet not really be able to get into much (yet). Even when my friend’s boy wasn’t quite able to walk in one, he had fun playing with the toys and light up elements on the walker. If I need them to just hang out, I will put them in their highchairs and give them toys to play with.

Lastly, I want to share with you some of the things we do during the day. I picked up an awesome used double stroller and the boys love going for walks. If it is nice out I will put them in their walkers on the patio and let them explore. I also like to do small art projects with them. If it is nasty outside we will just play, read books, and play with Fisher Price apps on my phone (no shame, they totally love it). I am looking forward to when they are a little older and we can do some more complex artwork, sensory play, and outdoor play.

My intention is to do some more in depth articles about how I handle the two boys; what they eat, how I get them to sleep etc…. This was just meant as a short overview. If there is something specific you would like to know about, please leave me a question in the comments and I will address it for you in a follow up blog. Also, if you have any tips for me PLEASE let me know. As always, thank you for reading.
